What is eduID?

By means of eduID every user can log on through the identity server operated by their own institution independent of whether they want to make use of the service provided by their own institution or somebody else. During one working process the user must identify themselves only once (Single Sign-on) and thus it can be used quickly and comfortably.
EduID is based on an open standard and any Hungarian higher education and research institution can have access to it.
By means of EduID it is possible to do group work with even foreign partners.
EduID is a service of the KIFÜ / NIIF program.

Why does eduID increase security?

In experience most security problems arise from the fact that the users are registered at several places, they don’t handle the passwords belonging to various systems properly and „logged-in” accidentally can be misused.
Only one single entry point per institution is needed, which can be protected more easily, even by means of strong authentication methods (e.g. hardware token).

How can the operating costs be reduced?

In the case of eduID identification everybody administers only the users of only their own institution, guest users are identified by either another institution or they can be registered into the VHO (Virtual Home Organization) service provided by the Federation. Thus the institution will be exempted of the administrative burdens related to guest users.
By means of eduID resources can be shared (e.g. teaching materials) with an optional, determined group of users within and outside the institution.

Can eduID be used only in academic circles?

The SAML2 technology serving as a basis for eduID can be used by anybody without restrictions. Anybody can join the federation (HREF-Hungarian Research and Education Federation) established by the higher education and research institutions, however, users’ data can be provided only by higher education and research institutions with proper user management.
